Bergamot – what’s worth knowing about it?

Bergamot (bergamia citrus) is a fruit that can be safely called a mine of beneficial compounds with a considerable impact on the body.

Good extracts or oils can be successfully used for health improvement and preventive measures. Anyway, check out what it has to offer you!

What is bergamot?

Bergamot, from a botanical point of view, is a mixture of lemon and bitter orange. It is not for nothing that it is called “Orange Bergamot” (Citrus Bergamia). Many sources say that the original region of origin is the territory of Asia (India), while one of the first harvests was recorded in 1750 in Italy.

Columbus, while docking in Italy, would have left a fruit there, which later received the name “jewel of Calabria”, where it began to be cultivated with great enthusiasm. Currently, a significant portion of the world’s crops come from Calabria, the Italian region of Reggio Calabria.

Bergamot fruits are harvested seasonally – the best period is from November to March. For medical devices or in the cosmetics industry, not only fruits and leaves are used, but also skin rich in health-promoting, healing and disinfecting compounds.

We can turn to many other properties…

Bergamot and cholesterol

The effect on cholesterol is, without a doubt, one of the most interesting uses of bergamot. All the more so since a significant part of people living in highly developed countries have a real problem with their level. Although the cholesterol reduction itself was not so spectacular, scientific articles (published, for example, in the International Journal of Cardiology) confirmed that use of the extract in individuals resulted in an increase in HDL with a simultaneous decrease in LDL and triglycerides.

Administration of citrus bergamia may therefore affect the overall cholesterol level as well as improve the ratio of cholesterol fractions. Furthermore, there is also a beneficial effect on our lipid profile.

Bergamot supports the cardiovascular/circulatory system

Many people worry, for example, about atherosclerosis and limiting fats and products containing cholesterol. These are actually two different questions… Of course, keeping your triglyceride levels under control is helpful in this context. However, it is largely related to excessive carbohydrate consumption over a long period of time, glycation problems and hyperactivity of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Adequate supplementation with bergamot can, to some extent, protect against an increase in the oxidation threshold (also applies to LDL) and also help with glycation problems. In addition, a positive effect on the lipid profile, anti-inflammatory effect and the ability to lower glucose levels reduce the risk of atherosclerotic changes.

The risk of dangerous narrowing of blood vessels is also reduced and thus blood flow in these vessels improves.

Bergamot for digestion and the digestive system?

There is no person who does not have digestive/eating problems. Therefore, it is worth knowing that bergamot and the fruit peel have been used successfully in traditional Chinese medicine for digestive problems due to their ability to stimulate enzymes. The fruit oil stimulated the secretion of gastric juice, in addition to being conducive to improving metabolism and the absorption of nutrients from food.

Furthermore, it has an antiseptic effect, so it can alleviate symptoms and improve the state of the system when we struggle, for example, with food poisoning.

Bergamot fights bacteria, soothes colds and disinfects

It is important to know that bergamot has antibacterial and antifungal properties, which has been documented by research. This is mainly due to the presence of linalool, thanks to which it can combat some problematic bacteria, such as Echerichie Coli. The same ingredient determined the usefulness of citrus bergamia essential oil in disinfecting wounds.

Furthermore, rich in saponins, phenolic acids
